Where the mountains meet the bush

The mountains draw closer.

Somewhere between the last stretch of dirt road and the first cup of coffee on the deck, the pace changes. Wide skies, mountain weather and the rhythms of wildlife take over.

Close enough for a weekend from Johannesburg or Durban. Far enough for the noise to fade and time together to begin again.

A family story written into the land

Loved back to life by one family

When the Van der Merwe family took responsibility for Kwaggashoek, the land needed care. Fences were built across difficult mountain ground, dams were added, indigenous habitats were protected and game was gradually re-established.

After fire destroyed the original thatched lodge in 2004, the family and staff rebuilt with determination. The lodge reopened in 2009, shaped by Heleen van der Merwe’s care for people and the belief that hospitality should feel personal.
